When we started Brook + Rill, the primary goal was to find a way to incorporate our art into usable items, so that they can be used and appreciated every day. We got to thinking about what daily items we seem to use often, in which having a beautiful art piece might be nice. Being a little too type-A means that I use coasters religiously. I even have marble coasters that I put on my marble coffee table. I don’t know why I do it; it’s just a thing for me. I need coasters everywhere, and I use coasters every single day. Naturally, my immediate thought was “We need to make coasters”. Sounds pretty easy, right? Wrong. All of the coasters we had in our home were less than ideal. Some were great for water glasses, but too small for a cup of coffee. None of them offered anything more than just a place to put your drink. I never knew what to do with my teaspoon after I was done stirring my coffee, so I’d just leave it on the coffee table, or grab a plate to put my spoon on. A few sets didn’t stack nicely for storage. And if you’re picky like I am, none of them were that nice. At best, the coasters in my home were neutral. The sight of them didn’t horrify me, but I just wasn’t excited by the way they looked. It became pretty clear that we were going to have to design a coaster that could solve all of these problems.
After many a failed design, we finally created it: the perfect coaster. We made a coaster that was big enough for even the largest mugs, without being heavy and clunky or too thick. They stacked perfectly, for storing away when they weren’t being used. I added a spoon rest on the side, so that I didn’t need to grab an extra plate, or get my table dirty and have to wipe it when I put the spoon down. The spoon rest also created an area in the coaster that really showed off the movement of the resin, and made them look even more unique. Best of all, they looked the part. Finally, I had a coaster set that I was proud of. Not going to lie, it feels kind of weird showing off your coasters to your friends, but we did the impossible; we created a coaster worth talking about.
Coasters might be a simple item that you might not ever think about on a daily basis, but our signature coasters make our home more beautiful. They’re a little ray of sunshine peeking through the monotony of a morning coffee before work. They create conversation at our dining table with our friends and family. Just like the beverages placed on them, they add comfort to our life. Crazy how such a small thing can do so much, but I guess it’s the little things in life, isn’t it? We hope that our products, especially our signature coasters can do even a fraction for you what they do for us. We’re so proud of them and we know you will be too!
